Why Do Bar Stools Squeak? (And How to Fix Them!)

Bar stools are high padded stools to serve the customers with comfort. However, these newly bought stools can soon become annoying because of their squeaky noises.

Therefore, if you own a bar stool, you might be wondering about the reasons for its squeaks or the necessary steps to prevent those squeaks. The joint between the stand and base is the main reason.

Why do bar stools squeak?

Bar stools squeak for two reasons: the bolts becoming loose and the parts turning rusty. Generally, the spot where the tall column meets the base is liable for bar stools’ squeaks. Moreover, as the bar stools become old, the bolts and parts of that location also get old, which results in squeaks.

Bar stools are made of various materials—wood, steel, hydraulic, and others. These materials change the durability, usage, flexibility, setting, and repairing of the bar stools.

Depending on different materials and factors, the reasons for squeaking differ broadly. If you want to know more, read the following reasons.

Weather related reshaping:

Wooden bar stools are prone to temperature, humidity and air. Weather mainly affects the wooden bar stool. Increased humidity expands woods.

Therefore, in rainy seasons or wet seasons, the bar stools’ parts (especially the column and base) extend, displacing the bolts.

Conversely, dry seasons can make the wooden bar stools shrink. So, the bolt gets loose.

Moreover, high humidity levels are adverse because they can make your steel or hydraulic bar stools rusty very quickly. That’s why your bar stools produce noises.

Damages by biotic creatures:

Termites cause damage to the wooden bar stool. They like to chew wooden materials. Therefore, your wooden bar stool can also fall casualties to these termites.

Though it doesn’t harm the bolts (because bolts are made of iron), it displaces the bolts by deforming the stool.

Additionally, carpenter bees, carpenter ants, powder beetles, and wood-boring beetles can harm your wooden bar stools by deforming them. As a result, the bar stools squeak.

Breakage of different parts:

One of the very common reasons for squeaking is the breakage of some parts of the bar stool. Such breakage can loose joints between those parts and generate sounds.

Bar stools come with armrests, backs, column, base, foot paddle etc. If any of this part slightly ruptures, that can make the whole chair unstable.

What’s worse is that it may cause other components to break. So, there can be peculiar noises produced from the entire structure.

How do I stop bar stools from squeaking?

By applying the proper chemical, oil, adding nails, complementary woods, and burnishing the surface, you can stop bar stools from squeaking. However, the process differs from type to type.

If you have a wooden bar stool, the steps should be the following:

  • Find out holes or any expansion.
  • Use pudding for holes or wrapping in case of increase.
  • Burnish the wood if the above steps don’t work

If you have a steel bar stool, the steps include:

  • Look for loose bolts or rustiness
  • Tighten the bolts or apply an aluminum layer for preventing dampness.
  • By jerking the bar stool, determine whether it is fixed or not.

For fixed heightened bar stools, the steps are below:

  • Position the stool upside down and jolt the column hard.
  • If you find bolts missing or loose, tighten them.
  • In case the problem exists, apply additional screws by drilling.

You must bear the following steps in mind if you have a hydraulic bar stool:

  • Lift the collar of plastic in the domed base.
  • Put WD40 or similar oil
  • Leave it for 12-14 hours for effectiveness.

If you have a swivel bar stool, the steps should be the following:

  • Check the swivel, whether it is rusty or not.
  • Apply lubricants in the bearing of the swivel.
  • Rotate or move the swivel so that oil reaches the crannies.

How do you oil squeaky bar stools? (Metal Bar Stool)

You can oil your squeaky bar stools by using lubricant spray or applying mineral oil directly to the coils, hinges, nuts, bolts, springs and other joints. It is most important to add oil in the location where the base and the column meet.

Squeaks of the bar stools are the results of friction energy, which converts to sound energy. So, you will need to decrease this friction to stop the noise. And lubricants can minimize friction levels. That’s why oiling to the parts where you think friction can happen is essential.

You should keep in mind that oiling only works in the case of metal bar stools.

How to lubricate swivel bar stools?

You can lubricate swivel bar stools by greasing the ball bearings of the swivels daily (at least once every six months) to lengthen the swivel unit’s life span. It will be best to use Moly EP type wheel bearing grease. Avoid WD-40 model lubricants or oil.

First, figure out the locations of swivel units. Next, apply lubricant in those places. Then, wait for a day. If the bar stool still makes noises, repeat the process.

Unfortunately, swivel bar stools are the worst target of rusts. That’s why when you try to rotate the bar stool, it squeaks. However, by lubricating, you can save the swivel units from rusts.

What oil do you use for squeaky bar stools?

You should use silicone-based lubricants for rubber, metal, or plastic. However, these lubricants can adversely affect the wood. So, you have to use beeswax for wooden bar stools. Outdoor bar stools do require waterproof lubricants because they get exposed to rain.

The four best lubricants for your squeaky bar stools are 3 In Multi Purpose Lubricant with PTFE 4 oz, Howard Feed- N-Wax Wood Polish and Conditioner, 16 oz, WD 40 Water Silicone, and Kano Aerokroil Penetrating Oil.

There are also spray lubricants or other mineral oils which you can use for metals. Using the specified oil can fasten the procedure of stopping the squeaks.

How to tighten and fix a wobbly metal bar stool?

To tighten and fix a wobbly metal bar stool, you should follow the steps mentioned below.

  • Jerk the bar stool by pulling it hither and thither and figure out the troublesome spot.
  • Check the nuts and bolts of those places with your fingers initially.
  • You may find one or more of them loose, and so fix them gradually and carefully.
  • Finally, move the bar stools powerfully to double-check on them.

Remember, figuring out the correct nuts and bolts is a crucial step. That’s because tightening the already tightened bolt can backfire by breaking or misplacing that joint permanently.

How do you reinforce wooden bar stools?

You can reinforce your wooden bar stools by glueing, hammering, and adding extra wooden support to them. Drilling additional holes for putting more nails can is another way of reinforcing wooden stools.

The bar stool made of wood can get shaky very quickly. That’s why it will be best if you can reinforce your bar stool before it becomes rickety.

Let’s dive into the process of reinforcing wooden bar stools below.

Figure out the source of the shakiness:

For reinforcing the wooden bar stool, you have to identify the specific problem. Then, depending on the type of the problem, the fixing mechanisms will vary.

Damage caused by insects, atmospheric increment or decrement, looseness of bolts and breakage of parts are some potential problems. You can identify the issues quickly by observing the bar stool.

For example, if you see holes in your wood, the problem is insects. Additionally, you can check your bolts by rotating them with your fingers. Similarly, problems like expansion or breakage are patent.

Act accordingly on the problem:

To prevent insects’ chewing, you can use pesticides in the holes you find. Moreover, be mindful of filling each gap with pesticide. If you miss even a single hole, that may extend to more holes since the termites remain there.

If you observe expansion or shrink, try to change the location of the bar stool. You must wrap the stool if possible.

The best way to fix mend breakage is by adding extra wooden pieces or hammering nails in the stool. You can also use wood glue for strengthening the joints.

In addition, expansion or insect infestation problems also arise because the bar stool touches the ground. To avoid this, you can attach steel or bricks under the bar stools’ legs.

Observe and repeat the process (if needed):

After you solve the problem, observe those problems. If it still exists, then you should repeat step 2.

If there is an insect invasion problem, you should carefully look for holes and fill them completely. Then, you can use pudding materials if the invasion goes beyond control.

Most of the time, adding more wooden handles or footsteps works for stabilizing the bar stool.

By following the above steps, you can prolong the stability of your wooden bar stools.

Your squeaky bar stools are fixable. Though your bar stool’s squeaking is not your fault, these noises may feel highly unpleasant before everyone. For ceasing the squeaks, you need to oil, hammer and use pesticides (if needed)

And by following the proper fixing procedures ardently, you can make your old squeaky bar stools brand new and soundless.
